Ronald Reagan, victor of World War III, R.I.P.

Ronald Reagan passed beyond us today.

He was one of our truly great Presidents. It's hard to imagine where we would be today without him.

Of all his achievements, surely the greatest was to lead us to final victory in World War III, the war against the Soviet Union. Many nations are free today because of him. More amazingly, he led us to victory when almost everyone thought such a victory impossible!

Ronald Reagan said to Soviet President Gorbachov: "Mr. Gorbachov, tear down this wall!"

And he did.

American Shame

With so many terrible things going on in the world, perhaps we should reflect on how unhappy Europe is with us, and why we should be ashamed of ourselves.

Michigan

I grew up in Michigan. Maybe I'll tell you some tales about that sometime.

For now, here's a little piccage that was taken on a trip back, some years ago.

It's in Hines Park, a 20-some-mile strip of flood plain that has a beautiful road and green park going down the middle of it, right outside Detroit.

Most of my formative years were spent either within a block of The Park, or right next to it. A pretty magical place for a kid.

Still wonderful for an adult. Here's proof.

Bush misunderestimated again?

David Warren thinks so, and I think he's got a pretty good point. Has Bush snookered the whole world?

People continue to forget a couple of things about the President: he was a fighter pilot, in one of the most recalcitrant and dangerous aircraft ever to grace the US inventory, and he was a champion poker player.

Both activities don't look all that tough from the outside - but they are. Exceedingly difficult and intensely competitive. He succeeded at both...and yet came away with a reputation as "dumb".

Yeah. Dumb like a fox.
